BRAVONew Procedure for Diagnosing Heartburn
Diagnosing Heartburn: Traditional testing for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease - or heartburn) involves having a catheter connected to a monitoring device on the patient's belt, placed down the nose and into the esophagus and left in place for 24 hours. This method, though effective, keeps patients from following their normal routines, potentially interfering with test accuracy. It also can cause some throat and nose discomfort.
Alternative Now Available: CVMC is now able to offer an alternate method, called BRAVO Esophageal PH Monitoring System. In this method: - A miniature capsule, approximately the size of a gel cap, is temporarily attached to the wall of esophagus during an endoscopy.
- The capsule transmits information via radio frequency to a pager-sized receiver worn on the patient's wristband.
- Data is uploaded to a computer which provides a complete report for the purpose of diagnosis
- The BRAVO capsule is naturally and comfortably passed through the body within a few days
Benefits: Research has shown the following patient benefits: - The patient is able to eat normally and go about their daily routine without any restrictions during the 24 or 48 hour testing period.
- BRAVO causes significantly less throat and nasal discomfort
- Data is sent to a pager-sized receiver, which is easily worn by the patient
- The data automatically uploads to computer software for analysis
